With Christmas behind and New Year's lurching. We still want to make special treats to entertain over New Years. Let's face it ladies, we can't do everything. Take some time to teach, demonstrate, show your kids how to cook with real, whole foods. Besides they are the ones who will eat most of it. Teaching your kids the importance of where their food comes from, distinguishing tastes of real food as to something synthetic, manufactured in a lab. When they get older, hopefully they will make better choices when it comes to their diet.
This is my son, Tyler, preparing a gluten-free cracker for the holidays. He loves the hands-on, measuring, stirring, kneading, rolling and cutting part of cooking. Lately he has been perfecting a spicy sauce for his rice pasta. Oh yes, he makes a mother proud. No KD for him.
Want to make your own crackers here's a simple recipe to try.
Flax Seed Crackers
1/4 cup flax or sesame seeds 1/4 cup ground flax seeds
1/2 tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp salt
4 tsp butter 1/2 cup almond beverage
1 1/2 cup flour (try alternative flours like spelt, kamut, gluten-free flours like rice or quinoa)
sea salt add to taste
In a bowl add first 6 ingredients. Mix until it resembles a coarse meal. Stir in milk and mix until mixture forms a soft dough. Wrap dough in plastic wrap and chill 10 20 minutes. Divide the dough into quarters. Turn out onto a lightly floured board. Roll out very thin to a rectangle 2 mm thick. Sprinkle with sea salt (Herbamere) and roll once more. Cut in to 6 cm squares. Transfer to an ungreased baking sheet. Bake 20 minutes at 325 degrees or until crisp and golden
